Martin Lewis has kept fit thanks to a habit that sees him walk an average of 10,000 steps a day. The money-saving expert has shared her top tips for burning 3,886 calories a day, simply by walking.

Writing on his blog, Martin said walking that many steps a day is a “conscious obsession”.

“I can and sometimes want to stop,” he added. “But the health benefits in recent years have been so positive that I don’t want to let it go. As once I do, I’m not sure it will ever come back.”

His steps are “built based on self-imposed rules” and the “buzz” he feels after hitting the daily goal.

For anyone wondering how Martin manages 10,000 steps a day, he has two rules; early morning exercise and walking when he has to talk.

Should the presenter have a phone call to make, or a meeting that doesn’t need to be a video call, he’ll talk and go – “often this is outdoors” and he manages his diary so that all his calls are back-to-back. he can go for a “long walk”.

Instead of taking public transportation, Martin also prefers to walk 75 minutes to the studio for his show.

If he can’t get out for a walk, “he either walks around and around [his] office or go downstairs and go on the treadmill”.

Walking has many benefits, but walking 10,000 steps a day can see you burn between 3,500 and 4,000 calories a day, and in Martin’s case, he’s “significantly lighter” than when he started a few years ago.

Walking 10,000 steps a day can be a lot, especially if your current step count is quite low. Here are some ways to increase your step count with a few changes to your daily habits:

Take advantage of your lunch break – If you can, take your lunch and go to a more scenic spot to enjoy it. Twenty minutes of brisk walking a day can knock a fifth of those 10,000 steps.

Take the stairs – elevators and escalators are great inventions for reaching high floors, but take the stairs whenever possible. On average, you can add 270 steps to your day with every minute you spend climbing stairs.

Pace around – Think about all the daily tasks you do standing still and move around instead. When you brush your teeth, you can add 240 steps on average in two minutes.

Go the distance – Don’t choose a car park close to the entrance, choose one that is further away and add a few hundred more steps.
