Mac apps often don’t get as much attention as apps designed for iPhones and iPads, so we have a regular video series designed to highlight some of the useful Mac apps we’ve come across over the past few months. Our April picks have apps for quickly accessing websites, adjusting remote display settings from the menu bar, using a Windows-like “alt-tab” tool, and more.

  • Web directory (Free) – WebCatalog is a handy app designed to turn websites into desktop apps so you can access everything from your favorite website in one convenient place. It offers independent, distraction-free windows and is an alternative to using browser tabs. WebCatalog is free to use, but it offers a limited number of apps. To unlock unlimited apps, you have to pay $40.
  • AltTab (Free) – AltTab is a simple app based on the Windows “alt-tab” Windows Switcher. The tool lets you customize your controls to mimic how the alt tab works on Windows, quickly switch between open app windows, and manipulate them with simple keyboard commands.
  • MonitorControl (Free) – As the name suggests, MonitorControl is a simple menu bar app that allows you to adjust the parameters of an external monitor. You can adjust brightness, contrast, volume and more.
  • Raycast (Free) – Raycast is a kind of all-in-one extensible launcher or Spotlight replacement app that offers a variety of functions to write scripts, enable shortcuts, search for files, control your system, write quick notes, open links, launch apps, clipboard history tracking and much more.
  • Clean Shot X ($29) – CleanShot X is a screen recording tool ideal for capturing screenshots and videos. It’s easy to capture what you want on screen, annotate it and send it out, plus there’s a cloud component that stores everything in one place. It can do screen recording and take screenshots even if the content does not fit on one screen. There is a one-time payment option of $29 that unlocks a year of updates, or users can pay $8 per month for continuous updates.
