Turn off notifications on Apple Watch: Step-by-step guide

Owning an Apple Watch makes it easier to see notifications you don’t want to unlock your iPhone for. Since your Apple Watch is always connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, all incoming notifications are easily sent to your wrists when you’re away from your iPhone or in your pocket.

While the Apple Watch can help you avoid being distracted by notifications on your phone, those same notifications can become just as annoying when you receive them on the Apple Watch. In the following post, we will explain all the ways you can avoid receiving or seeing certain notifications on your Apple Watch so that you are not interrupted by them from time to time.

How to dismiss unread notifications on Apple Watch

If you have a bunch of pending notifications on your Apple Watch, you can remove them from the watch’s notification center directly from your wrist. You can check if you have any unread notifications on your watch by checking for one red warning dot at the top of the dial.

If there are indeed any unread notifications on your Apple Watch, you can dismiss or remove them by first swiping down from the top of the watch face. To access the notification center from any app or screen, press and hold the top edge of the watch, then swipe towards.

You will now see a stack of notifications visible inside the notification center. You can scroll through different notifications by using Digital crown on the clock or by swiping up or down on the screen.

To dismiss an individual or group notification from this screen, swipe it to the left.

When more options appear, tap X icon on the right side of the selected notification to remove it.

If you want to dismiss all your unread notifications from the Notification Center, swipe to the top or use the Digital Crown to get there. When you get to the top of the notification center, tap Delete everything to dismiss each of your visible notifications from the Notification Center.

The Notification Center on Apple Watch will no longer show pending notifications.

Note: Some app notifications from Apple Watch will be dismissed automatically without removing it on the watch as soon as you access the same notification on iPhone or open the relevant app on it.

How to mute notifications on Apple Watch

If you don’t want to receive notifications from an app on your Apple Watch temporarily, you can mute them for an hour or the rest of the day. Muting notifications is only possible for individual notifications, which means you won’t be able to mute multiple app notifications at the same time.

To temporarily mute notifications from an app, swipe down from the top of the watch face or tap and hold the top edge of the watch from any app or screen, then swipe down.

When the notification center appears, scroll through different notifications using Digital crown or swipe up or down on the screen.

If you find a notification you want to turn off temporarily, swipe it to the left.

From the additional options that appear, tap 3-dot button on the right side of the selected notification.

On the next screen, choose from one of the following options to turn off notifications from the app for a limited duration:

Simmer for 1 hour: This will mute all notifications from the app for the next hour.

Mute for today: This will disable all notifications from the app for the current day and you will only see notifications from the app again from tomorrow.

When you mute notifications of any kind, they remain inside the Notification Center unless you manually dismiss them. Your watch will no longer notify you of incoming notifications from the app or person for the selected duration.

How to turn off the notification indicator on Apple Watch

By default, when you receive notifications on your Apple Watch, you’ll see a red notification dot at the top of the watch face to indicate that you’ve received notifications that you haven’t opened. While this dot is important for letting you know when you have pending notifications, it can also become quite annoying to look at the watch face if you keep getting app notifications on your Apple Watch.

Fortunately, Apple allows you to turn off this notification indicator on your watch, so you don’t have to see the red notification dot at the top of the watch face at all times. You can follow the steps below to turn off notification indicator directly from Apple Watch or your connected iPhone.

On Apple Watch

To turn off the notification indicator directly from Apple Watch, tap Digital crown on the right edge. This will open a list or grid of all the apps available on your watch. From this screen, find and select Settings app on your watch.

When the Settings app opens, tap Alerts.

On the next screen, turn off Alert indicator toggle to disable the red notification dot from the watch face.

On the iPhone

To disable the notification indicator from iPhone, open See app on iOS.

On the next screen, tap Turn off to disable notifications from this app completely.

You can repeat this step to turn off notifications from other apps on your watch or iPhone.

On the iPhone

If you want to turn off Watch notifications for apps individually, the process will vary slightly based on the app whose notification settings you’re changing. Third-party app notifications can be easily disabled by turning off their notification switches, while for pre-installed apps, you have to customize them to your preferences one by one.

To access your Apple Watch notification settings, open See app on your iPhone.

When the app opens, tap My Clock tab bottom left corner.

On this screen, select Alerts.

From here, there are two ways to disable notifications – one for built-in apps and one for third-party apps.

You will now see several options on the screen. Here, choose Alerts off.

How to turn off sound notifications on Apple Watch

By default, when you get incoming notifications, Apple Watch can notify you via both audio and haptics. In addition to feeling small vibrations, users will hear chimes whenever they receive calls, messages, emails or app notifications on Apple Watch. Since the watch will always be on your wrists, you’ll feel the haptics every time you get a notification, so there’s no reason you’ll want to hear the same notifications via audio alerts.

To turn off audible notifications for each notification you receive on your watch, you can turn on silent mode, which will mute sounds for all notifications. During silent mode, the watch will only notify you via haptics.

On Apple Watch

To turn off audio notifications on Apple Watch, open the device’s Control Center. To access the Control Center, press and hold the bottom part of the watch’s screen, then swipe up.

This opens the Control Center on the Apple Watch. On this screen, press Clock icon.

The icon will now have a red background to indicate that your watch is now in silent mode.

When the app opens, tap My Clock tab bottom left corner.

On this screen, select Sounds and haptics.

On the Sounds & Haptics screen, turn on Silent mode alternate on top.

This will enable silent mode on your Apple Watch and you will no longer hear notification tones on it when you receive a notification.

How to turn off notifications on the Apple Watch lock screen

Ideally, to help you avoid missing important notifications, Apple Watch will show you a notification summary for all incoming notifications you receive. This summary will highlight the app’s name, the name of a contact (who interacted with you), the app’s icon, and a brief overview of the notification. Additionally, when you raise your wrist to view the alert, all details of the alert will be automatically uploaded on the screen.

If you don’t want your watch to show you these notifications when it’s locked, you can disable them by turning off “Show summary when locked” and then enabling “Tap to show full notification” so that the details of a notification are hidden until you presses. You can turn off such notifications on your watch’s lock screen from both your watch and your iPhone by following the instructions below.

On Apple Watch

To turn off notifications on the lock screen, tap Digital crown on the right edge. This will open a list or grid of all the apps available on your watch. From this screen, find and select Settings app on your watch.

When the Settings app opens, tap Alerts.

On the next screen, turn off Show summary when locked toggle.

Additionally, to prevent notification details from appearing automatically, turn on Press to view full notification toggle.

This ensures that your watch does not display a notification summary or details when locked. You will continue to receive notifications, but they will only be available when you launch the notification center on your watch.

On the iPhone

To turn off clock lock screen notifications from an iPhone, open See app on your iPhone.

When the app opens, tap My Clock tab bottom left corner.

On this screen, select Alerts.

From here you switch off Show summary when locked toggle under “Notification privacy”.

Additionally, to prevent notification details from appearing automatically, turn on Press to view full notification toggle under the same section as above.

Apple Watch will no longer display notification summaries or details when locked. However, you will continue to receive notifications, but they will only be available when you launch the notification center on your watch.
