ST. LOUIS, MO — March 15, 2023 — ThrottleNet, named the #1 Cybersecurity Firm in St. Louis by Small Business Monthly, is issuing a warning to area businesses and organizations to be aware of an increase in cyber attacks in 2023.
“The media is reporting a large number of cyber attacks on the rise and several are of an extreme nature,” said George Rosenthal, president of ThrottleNet. “These include breaches ranging from government agencies to labor unions, to school systems and even fast-food chain restaurants.”
According to Rosenthal, one breach occurred in mid-February with the US Marshals Service being the victim of a ransomware attack. “CBS News reported that some of the service’s most sensitive information was compromised, including law enforcement materials, personal information about employees and even potential targets of federal investigations.”
“Then there’s Pipefitters Local 537 in Boston that suffered an attack that resulted in a $6.4 million loss,” he said.

Denver Public Schools fell victim to a malicious hacking incident in early 2023, Rosenthal added. “Denver television station KUSA reported that the hacking incident exposed personal information, including social security numbers and bank numbers, of an estimated 15,000 system employees.”
Even popular fast food restaurants are being hacked. “Several media outlets, including Nation’s Restaurant News, reported that Chick-fil-A confirmed that over 71,000 customer accounts were breached in a month-long credential attack. “Threat actors tapped into customers’ stored rewards balances and gained access to their personal information including membership numbers, mobile payment numbers and masked credit/debit card numbers. It can be a nightmare,” he said.
Rosenthal said most of these incidents can be avoided with proper team training and cyber due diligence. “Many solutions are obvious, but often overlooked. These can include regularly updating systems to cover vulnerabilities, optimizing proper password and email protection with strong passwords used for each account, and using MFA (Multifactor Authentication).
“However, cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated and we recommend a more intense layered approach with EDR (endpoint detection and response) and DNS (domain name system), paired with a 24/7 Security Operations Center (SOC) to manage response and remediation of any threats . We call it MDR Managed Detection and Response.”
“Companies that can provide the right outsourced cybersecurity training and services, like ThrottleNet, can help businesses avoid almost any cyberattack and protect what’s most valuable to them, not just their data, but also their people.”
