The 6 best coloring book apps for kids

It’s no secret that young children have tons of energy. Coloring can be a great outlet for your child to focus their energy and use their creativity. But you can’t always have coloring books and various drawing tools with you.

Luckily, there are coloring apps that you can download to your smartphone or tablet! Then, if you’re out shopping or stuck in traffic, hand your child your smartphone or tablet with a coloring app loaded. They will remain entertained with the task at hand, allowing you to focus on what you need to do.

1. Color game: Color and paint

Coloring Games provides six unique ways for your child to color. On the home screen, you can choose your preferred coloring method, including fun paint, color fill, drawing, glow pen, paint by number, and water art.

Both the Fun Paint and Color Fill categories provide an image for your child to color, and they can choose from unique drawing tools and colors to create their art. Alternatively, the Drawing and Glow Pen categories can start with a blank sheet of paper, so your child can create anything from their imagination.

Number Paint is a great tool to use if your child is learning their numbers and colors. They will see a basic image with numbers on each major section, and then a corresponding marker to the right with a number on it. This category is just like paint sets for adults.

Finally, water art is a great category for younger kids who can’t quite understand the coloring process yet. There is an image on the screen and all you have to do is drag your finger across the screen to display the watercolor image.

2. Bimi Boo Coloring

The only free part of Bimi Boo’s Coloring app is the Animals section, with 15 different pictures to color. All of the other categories—including Adventure, Underwater, and Dinosaurs—are $1.99 each, which is pretty comparable to physical coloring books. Or you can spend $7.99 to unlock everything in the app, including extra colors for the drawing tools.

There are seven unique drawing tools, including a marker, a pencil, a brush, a spray can, a paint can, a glittery marker and a patterned marker. You have access to all the colors of marker and pencil for free, but the other five tools only offer three colors for free.

3. Riafy Technologies Coloring

Like the Bimi Boo app above, this coloring book app also offers only the Animals category for free, with a total of 19 pictures to color. But to unlock any other category in this app from Riafy Technologies, there is a one-time fee of $34.99.

Each image comes with a recommended color palette and a completion percentage to let you know how much you have left to color before the image is officially ready to go to the art gallery. Each image uses a fill color technique where you tap the desired color followed by the part of the image you want to fill.

So it’s a guess what? section that hides all the images behind a question mark until you tap one to open it and see what it is. The Glow category has images with outlines that you trace over with a glowing marker to create a cool image. And finally, there is a greetings section where your child can color a birthday card, a get well card and so on for someone special.

5. Coloring book for children

This is one of the best freestyle coloring apps for your kid. Many coloring apps allow you to simply tap on an area of the image to color an entire section. While you can do that in this app, you can also select the brush and simply move your finger where you want to apply the color. This gives your child a more authentic color experience.

Categories to choose a coloring page from include alphabets, animals, fruits, numbers, planets, dinosaurs, patterns and shapes. If your child is currently learning numbers, shapes or the alphabet, this is a great way to keep them entertained while they learn. There is a ton of free content in this app, but if you want even more, you can upgrade to the full version for just $0.99.

Coloring is fun for everyone

Coloring is a great activity for children of all ages because it inspires creativity, improves their color vocabulary and helps them develop fine motor skills. With physical coloring books, there can be a lot of potential clutter involved, and it’s difficult to pack everything up to take it with you. A virtual coloring book app is an easy solution to both of these problems.

And because kids notice what adults are doing, you can even download a coloring book app for yourself too!
