The newest console generation got off to a rough start thanks to a deadly mix of hardware shortages, predatory retailers and a lack of compelling launch titles. But two years later, the PlayStation 5 is finally kicking off a year full of must-play games that finally showcase the console’s full potential. From long-awaited sequels to inventive new titles, this year’s best PlayStation games appeal to a wide range of gamers – and most of them can’t be played anywhere else.
Here are the 10 best PlayStation games of 2022.
10. Ghostwire: Tokyo
Based on Japanese legends and set in an alternate Tokyo under attack by supernatural invaders from the spirit world, Ghostwire: Tokyo is a strange PlayStation gem that looks set to become a cult classic. Unusually for a first-person game, it doesn’t focus on gunplay, but rather on magical abilities powered by expressive hand gestures. The dual protagonists – a mystical adept and a spirit – have some great banter, but the real star of the show is Tokyo itself, full of secrets and beautiful to behold.
9. Gran Turismo 7
Racing games are a bit of a niche genre, though Gran Turismo 7 is so good that even car haters should consider getting on board. It is impossible to ignore how incredibly beautiful Gran Turismo 7 is, -and that’s before you get behind the wheel. The handling of the huge number of cars is simply incredible, and there is an almost overwhelming amount of content to burn through.
8. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen
The witch queen sets a new standard for Fate 2 expansions, giving one of the highest scores in the series so far. Fate 2its storied history is not always easy to analyze without an explanatory video article, but The witch queen delivers a great story that manages to pull the various threads in the Destiny universe into something coherent and engaging. It is filled with captivating locations and memorable battles, both through the main campaign and the new raid. All in all, it’s a treat for Fate 2 diehards, and it’s worth starting from scratch just to reach it if you’re new to the game.
7. Rollerdrome
It’s hard to think of two things that fit worse than roller skates and rocket launchers, but somehow, Rollerdrome makes it work. Part extreme sport and part gladiatorial combat, Rollerdrome is an absurdly fun, high-speed spectacle that tests your ability to think on your feet (or wheels) as much as it tests your reflexes. Add in a phenomenal soundtrack, stunning art and a surprisingly interesting story, and you have one of the biggest cult hits of the year.
6. The Last of Us Part I
Either a remake of the 2013s or not The last of us was justified, it is difficult to argue with the results. The Last of Us Part I doesn’t change the original’s already excellent story, but it updates everything with astonishing skill. From the sound design to the immaculate graphics, The Last of Us Part I is a captivating technical showcase to match the captivating story.
Like other recent first-party releases, it’s packed with new accessibility options, and the gameplay benefits from 10 years of innovation over the original. In short, it’s the best way to play one of the most recognized games of all time.
5. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin
When Square Enix announced they were returning for a retelling of the original Final Fantasy, this probably wasn’t what anyone had in mind. Stranger of Paradise had perhaps the best marketing campaign of all time, with each new trailer introducing elements more absurd than the last (Limp Bizkit? Frank Sinatra?!).
When Final Fantasy Origins and its snarling meathead protagonist arrived, it was as bizarre as it looked, but it also had one of the best combat systems of the year, offering limitless potential to define your playstyle.
4. Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Forbidden West is one of the best looking games ever, and shows just what the PlayStation 5 is capable of in the right hands. It fills out the strange, captivating world it’s established in Horizon Zero Dawn while expanding on the excellent combat that made the original a hit. Thanks to an extensive range of accessibility options, it’s also a game that’s welcoming to a much wider range of players than regular AAA fare.
3. Stray
Everyone wants to be cats, like in 2022 Stray proves. This PS5 adventure was brought to success on the paws of its adorable protagonist, but that’s far from the only thing it has going for it. The game’s robot-filled world is beautifully detailed and full of nooks and crannies to explore with your cat-like agility. A great soundtrack and sound design cement Stray as one of the year’s most pleasant gaming experiences.
2. God of War Ragnarok
god of warThe 2018 transformation from an aggro hack-and-slash franchise to a mythological family drama couldn’t have been more surprising. God of War Ragnarok shows that the reboot success was no accident, with even more exciting combat and a bigger story. This time around, there are more varied environments and enemies, with a larger cast to liven up Kratos and Atreus’ quest.
1. Fire Ring
FromSoftware has been putting out hit after hit for more than a decade, but it reached new levels of success with Fire Ring. A game of unimaginable scope, it still manages to fill its beautiful, decaying world with surprises around every corner. Fire Ring is a masterclass in world building and free exploration, allowing players to define their own pace and playstyle – as long as they’re up for a big challenge.
