A matchup of coaches who won national championships as players highlights Wednesday’s action as the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments get rolling.
In the men’s first four in Dayton, Ohio, former point guards Bobby Hurley and Steve Alford will lead their squads into a battle of No. 11 seeds that just narrowly made the 68-team field.
Hurley, a back-to-back national champion under Mike Krzyzewski at Duke in 1991 and 1992, and his 22-12 Arizona State Sun Devils, will take on the 22-10 Nevada Wolf Pack, coached by Steve Alford, a 1987 champion with Indiana and coach Bobby Knight.
The other men’s First Four games pit No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson of the Northeast Conference and Texas Southern of the SWAC.
The women’s NCAA tournament begins with the first of two first four games — No. 11 seed Mississippi State vs. Illinois and No. 16 seed Sacred Heart vs. Southern.
