Panhandle downs Floydada 54-28 to advance to area round
In a season that has featured amazing Landyn Hack performance after amazing Landyn Hack performance, the Panhandle Panthers got another one in the opening round of the playoffs Friday night in Canyon.
Hack ran for three touchdowns and 227 yards while passing for 219 yards and two scores against Floydada. That effort led the Panthers past the Whirlwinds 54-28 at Happy State Bank Stadium in the bidistrict round of the 3A Division I football playoffs.
“It (feels) great,” Hack said. “Senior year, that’s a good way to start the playoffs. Now on to next week.”

It wasn’t just the Hack show as Wyatt Brookshire ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Kelby Olson hauled in nine catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns in an impressive performance as well.
It was an explosive first quarter as Brookshire scored on an eight-yard run midway through the period before Hack ripped off a 37-yarder four minutes later. Hack hit Olson with a minute left in the second and the Panthers converted two-point attempts on all three scores to make it 24-0.
Floydada got on the board with a three-yard run just before the end of the first, but scoring runs of 34 and 61 yards by Hack in the second made it 40-7 at the midway point.

A three-yard scoring run by Brookshire and an 18-yard touchdown connection from Hack to Olson in the third made it 54-7 Panthers before they put JV in.
“I think the biggest thing is you want to come into the next round injury free,” head coach Dane Ashley said. “We felt like we got the work we wanted out of them and you want to get your twos into a big game like that. It’s good to give them that experience so that next year when you play in games like this it’s more acclimatized.”
Credit Floydada for never giving up. Touchdown runs by Isaih Alvarado of two and 67 yards in the third cut it to 54-21, and a one-yard scoring connection from Henderson to Saul Reyes gave the game its final score.
“We’ve made a lot of progress,” head coach JR Compton said. “We still have a long way to go and when you play a really good team like the Panhandle … these things happen. You have to learn and you have to grow from it.”
Next up for the Panthers is the surrounding area. They play Hawley on Friday at 3 p.m. at Lowery Field in Lubbock.
