- A new dry shampoo hack recently went viral on TikTok.
- To test it, all you need is dry shampoo and a spray bottle filled with water.
- An editor tried the hack and shares her results.
Confession: I hate washing my hair. Everyone has different ideas about how often you should shampoo, but for me twice a week is the most I can commit to. A shower that involves a full shampoo and conditioning routine takes way too much time, not to mention the extra minutes it takes to style my hair afterwards. That’s why dry shampoo is usually a staple for me, and luckily for me (and you) I recently learned a new trick that has changed the way I use the product for the better.
Sometimes I use dry shampoo immediately after washing and styling my hair as a preventative measure, but most often I use it in the morning after waking up to greasy roots. However, I often find that no matter how I use it, my hair ends up feeling a bit brittle and gross – no matter how many brands I try. Because of this, I’ve tried to skip the step as much as possible. I can usually go a full five to six days without needing shampoo, but recently my hair has gotten greasy just one or two days after a wash.
I thought it was time to add dry shampoo back into my routine and decided to do some research to see if there were any good hacks on my favorite beauty tips and tricks app: TikTok. I ended up coming across a video made by influencer Jaci Marie, where she showed off a hack that involved spraying your hair with water after applying dry shampoo. Eager to test it, I decided to try it that very evening.
Before bed, I gathered my product of choice, Unite Hair U: DRY Clear Dry Shampoo ($29), and a spray bottle filled with water. I started by spraying the roots of my hair with the dry shampoo and then waiting about five minutes for the product to soak up the oil in my hair. I then massaged it into my scalp. Then I tackled the weird part – misting my hair with water. I took a spray bottle and wet the roots of my head and scalp. I tried to only mist the areas where I had used dry shampoo, skipping out on the mid-lengths and ends. From there I went to bed.
When I woke up in the morning and went into the bathroom to see how my hair looked, I was surprised to see that I had much more volume at the roots. Instead of it actually being plastered to my head, everything felt airy and, dare I say, clean? While I wouldn’t say the hack made my hair look like I just jumped out of the shower and had a blowout, it was a huge improvement from how it usually looked after days of no washing and only using dry shampoo.
I’ve tried this trick a few more times since that first run, and I’ve found that it works no matter what brand of dry shampoo I use. It’s been a total change and I’m back to going six days between washes so that’s a win in my book.
