Lionel Messi Barcelona contract: Sergio Aguero Comments: The rumor of Lionel Messi’s return to Barcelona is growing, and Sergio Aguero, a former colleague from Argentina, has added fuel to the fire. Last year, Messi was forced to switch from the Catalans to Paris Saint-Germain. This was because Barcelona’s weak financial foundations and exorbitant wage structure made it difficult for them to finance him. At a tearful news appearance to announce his departure, the Argentine superstar openly sobbed. He explained that Barca just couldn’t afford to re-sign him. The news of Messi’s departure also shocked La Blaugrana supporters. Messi, arguably the best player in the club’s history, scored an astonishing 672 goals in 778 games while playing for Camp Nou.

Aguero spoke about the circumstances that led to Messi’s iconic spell with Barcelona. In a recent interview with El Chringuito, he still wore a pained expression while doing so. He said:

“When the whole Leo thing happened, I thought someone must have hacked Barcelona’s social media accounts. I thought, this is a joke. I was with [Twitch host] Ibai drinking buddy, and suddenly… he looked at the phone and exclaimed, “Nothing! is this true?” He showed me the phone with the statement from Barça.

“I said, ‘Ibai, mate, this is impossible’. I told him then and there that it was obvious that the website had been hacked and that it was probably just some sweet talk from Barça who would later say he was staying. “I decided to wait, but the hours passed and I saw that the statement was still there. All of a sudden I was like, ‘Hey, you know what? nobody hacked it.” he added.

Aguero also stated that Messi was quite optimistic in his ability to negotiate a contract extension. He said that Messi often expressed that he wanted to be photographed wearing the Barca shirt. The player had one in his room.

“We were at the Copa America and he had the Barca shirt in his room. And every 3-4 days he said to me “I think my contract is renewed, let’s take a picture with the Barcelona shirt.” he stated.

The former Manchester City player decided to join his international team-mate at Camp Nou in June 2021. He had high expectations for the transfer. But Messi’s departure from Barcelona was revealed just weeks later, completely shocking Aguero. Due to a heart problem, the Argentine was forced into early retirement after just five games with the Blaugrana.
