How to unlock your Chromebook with your Android phone with Smart Lock

Logging in to your devices should be quick and easy. Most Android phones have facial recognition or a fingerprint scanner to get in. Some of the best Chromebooks have built-in fingerprint scanners, but they’re uncommon. Google’s Smart Lock feature allows you to use your Android phone as the password for your device. By simply unlocking your phone, whether it’s via biometrics or with a password or PIN, you can access your Chromebook without typing anything.

How to set up Smart Lock on your Chromebook

To get started, you’ll need to set up Smart Lock on your Chromebook.

  1. Connect your Android phone to your Chromebook.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth on your Android phone and Chromebook. Bluetooth is required for this feature to work.
  3. To open Settings app on your Chromebook.
  4. click on Connected devices section on the menu on the left.
  5. Next to Android phone you select the name of the phone.
  6. Press Smart Lock toggle to flip it on.
  7. Smart Lock is now set up and ready to use.

How to unlock your Chromebook with your Android phone

Now that Smart Lock is set up, let’s take a look at how to use the feature.

  1. Go to the login screen by starting over, lockor log out of your Chromebook.
  2. You may see a message that says “Your phone is locked. Unlock it to get in.” This means that Smart Lock is working.
  3. Unlock your connected Android phone.
  4. Print enter key or click on your profile picture.
  5. You are now signed in to your Chromebook.

What do I do if Smart Lock stops working?

If Smart Lock stops working, here are some tips and tricks to get it working again:

  1. To open Quick settings menu on your Chromebook by clicking the time in the bottom right. Insure blue tooth is on.
  2. To open Settings app on your Android phone and make sure blue tooth is on.

  3. To open Settings app on your Chromebook, go to Connected devices section and make sure your Android phone is listed as a connected device.
  4. Restart both devices.
  5. Disconnect your Android phone from your Chromebook and reconfigure Smart Lock.
  6. Smart Lock should now work.

Bonus: How to set up a login PIN

If your phone isn’t nearby, a PIN code is a good secondary method for logging in quickly.

  1. Start Settings app on your Chromebook.
  2. Press Security and privacy option on the left.
  3. Click Lock screen and login on the top.
  4. Select PIN or password under Lock the screen from sleep mode section.
  5. click on Set up PIN code button. A dialog box may ask you to enter your password. Enter the password, click Confirmand press on Set up PIN code button again.
  6. enter desired PIN code and click Continue.
  7. enter your PIN code again and click Confirm.
  8. You have now set up a PIN code as a secondary login method.
