How to fill the dishwasher correctly – avoid common “mistakes”

“Here are some tips and tricks that will ensure your dishes are as clean as possible. First, make sure your dishes and plates are facing the center of the dishwasher.

“A lot of people think that a dishwasher is a bit magical, that if you put a plate in there anyway, it will be clean by the end of the cycle.”

However, the water is thrown from the center of the appliance, which means that the side facing the center of the machine will be hit the hardest. This means that it is important to place the dirtiest side of the plate, bowl or dish towards the centre.

“The tines are the little spokes that hold your plates upright, plates and bowls should be placed between the tines, not on top of them.

“When your plates and bowls are placed between the tines, it allows the water to move more freely into the top rack of the dishwasher.

“If you put something on top of the tines, this stops and prevents cleaning of items on the top shelf.

“My final tip is to make sure you don’t overcrowd the dishwasher. The water in the machine and the spray arms that wash your dishes need enough space to get in and do their job.

“Overfilling a dishwasher can inhibit this, and your dishes won’t be washed as thoroughly as they could be.”

However, to save on your energy bill, it is important to ensure that it is filled as much as possible, as this will ensure that it is only used every other day, which means that it will not affect energy use to a large extent.

According to appliance manufacturer Whirlpool, there are a number of kitchen items that can be cleaned in the dishwasher, including mixing bowls and pans.

These should be placed on the back of the bottom basket and angled towards the center of the dishwasher. Meanwhile, small plates can be loaded to fill any gaps to ensure no space is wasted.

Brits should also take the time to make sure they don’t block the spray arms, which can hinder the entire cleaning cycle.

The pros said: “The spray arms contain the nozzles that wash and rinse your dishes, and blocking them can affect the washing performance of the laundry.”

Although there are a number of things that can be placed in the appliance, there are also some that are only suitable for hand washing.

This includes kitchen knives, fine china, delicate glass, as well as wooden items and cast iron pots and pans.
