Government’s Lani Refiti vows to ‘hack the hackers’

GUESS’ OPINION by Lani Refiti, ANZ Regional Director of cyber security firm Claroty: The Australian government has recently announced a team of 100 of Australia’s top cyber security experts to track down the people responsible for recent attacks on Optus and Medibank, forming a new partnership with the Australian Federal Police and Signals Directorate.
These massive cyber-attacks targeting Australians’ sensitive personal data prompted Cyber Security Minister Clare O’Neil and Attorney-General Mark Drefyus to launch the task force, announcing revenge in a joint statement that they would “hack the hackers”.
After this promise to “hack the hackers” after the last major breaches at Optus and Medibank, building real resilience is fundamentally much more important than “reactivity” after an attack.
“Defence Minister Richard Marles noted in a speech this week at the Sydney Institute that ‘A prerequisite for economic prosperity is national security’ – and I would like to reinforce that a prerequisite for national security is secure critical infrastructure. Australia’s ability to provide clean water, generate sufficient power/energy and ensure the food supply to citizens cannot be disrupted by cybercriminals or nation-state actors.
The federal government’s actions to “hack the hackers” are consistent with the Ransomware Action Plan released in 2021, which sets out to build capacity to disrupt criminal networks and infrastructure.
“While we support the federal government’s position to build an offensive capability against cybercriminals, particularly those who seek to disrupt our critical infrastructure, it cannot take away the need to build resilient cyber programs in the first place and improve the cybersecurity posture of our critical infrastructure organizations.
“Where appropriate, we would also like to see the federal government share the techniques, tactics and procedures used by cybercriminal groups with the wider community, to help organizations put preventative measures in place to combat future cyberattacks.”
The task force has already begun working daily with international partners to identify cybercriminals.

ENABLE HYBRIDSKY AND REDUCE NETWORK LATENCY WHITEPAPER
Hybrid cloud promises to bring together the best of both worlds, enabling businesses to combine the scalability and cost-effectiveness of the cloud with the performance and control you can get from your on-premises infrastructure.
Reducing WAN latency is one of the biggest issues with hybrid cloud performance. Taking advantage of compression and data deduplication can reduce network latency.
Research firm Markets and Markets predicted that the size of the hybrid cloud market is expected to grow from US$38.27 billion in 2017 to US$97.64 billion by 2023.
Colocation facilities provide many of the benefits of having your servers in the cloud while still maintaining physical control of your systems.
Cloud connectivity provided by colocation facilities can enable you to leverage their low-latency, high-bandwidth connections to the cloud in addition to providing a solid connection back to your on-premises business network.
Download this white paper to learn what you need to know about enabling the hybrid cloud in your organization.
