England face Japan in their final autumn international as they attempt to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Argentina last week.

The Red Rose went down 30-29 at Twickenham to the Pumas with the defeat representing a first at home to the South Americans in 16 years.

Eddie Jones has made a number of changes in the hope of kick-starting their autumn campaign with the World Cup less than a year away.

Japan will go into the contest high on confidence, having given the All Blacks a scare last month in Tokyo, fading late on to a 38-31 defeat.

England 3-0 Japan, 6 minutes

England are now guilty of offside in midfield and Japan are starting to fizz a bit as they work the phases. Kazuki Himeno makes a significant carry as he thunders in from the right touchline.

Ellis Genge gets the nod from the England fans as he delivers a rib tickler to Atsushi Sakate as Japan run out of steam.

The penalty is theirs, of course, and into the England 22 Sakate leads his team for the first time.

PENALTY! ENGLAND 3-0 Japan (Owen Farrell penalty, 5 minutes)

England are first on the board. The most decent start Owen Farrell could wish for from the tee.

England 0-0 Japan, 4 minutes

Japan think they’re out, but an offside ends their game on the pitch! Instead, Marcus Smith telegraphed a cross for Freddie Steward, with Japan rushing to charge it down and then rush on to the loose ball.

But the visitors were too early in their efforts to stop Smith from unleashing that crossfield number – England penalty and this time it’s the points.

England 0-0 Japan, 3 minutes

Penalty advantage for England. Marcus Smith lifts a long pass over the top of the defensive line to give Jonny May his first meaningful involvement on his return to an England shirt, before Dave Ribbans has his first at all – the debutant carries well.

Back for the penalty, though – and England fancy a trip in the right corner, which is excellent. Luke Cowan-Dickie will throw the lineout five meters out.

England 0-0 Japan, 2 minutes

A first hint of what Japan can do with Dylan Riley almost breaking England’s shackles near the touchline. His relief chops the daisies and gets flyhacked out full force.

England 0-0 Japan, 1 minute

Japan play twice at the back in the opening passage inside the 22, kicking long to Freddie Steward, who returns the kick.

Joe Cokanasiga takes the next dunk up front from Japan, delivering a punishing carry as he angles in the box.

Nice high header from Japan’s fly-half Takuya Yamasawa under considerable English pressure 30 meters from their own line.

Here we go

James Doleman, our referee this afternoon, has a final communication check with his assistants. Japan is dressed in blue today, with metallic flourishes on the sides.

England’s men in white for the first time this autumn. Owen Farrell will get things going.

Hymns

There are a few Japanese fans scattered around Twickenham, who stand proudly for a nice sing-along of “Kimigayo”, warmly received by the rest of the crowd.

A little more pep in the home supporters’ accompaniment of “God Save the King” this week.
