DraftKings and BetMGM announce data leaks in November

- DraftKings and BetMGM both released statements notifying customers of the data breach.
- Both state-based legal sports betting sites admitted that private information such as credit card numbers, addresses and player names were released.
BOSTON – According to both DraftKings and BetMGM, the two popular state-regulated sports betting sites in the US announced that they have uncovered data breaches that have led to the theft of their customers’ information.
DraftKing’s data breach
Based on DraftKings’ statement regarding their cyber attack, the biggest gamblers did was not on any game or daily fantasy contest, but it was quite easy to use their legal sports betting site.
In a statement, DraftKings notified the public of nine different personal data points that were stolen in the data breach that affected 67,995 customers:
- Customer name/account name
- The last four digits of the payment card
- Address
- E-mail address
- Telephone number
- Balance
- Previous transactions
- Profile picture
- Last date for password change
DraftKings announced that CVV for players’ credit cards, Social security number and driver’s license number were not stolen. Financial account numbers were not stolen either.
The data breach was revealed at the end of November, with DraftKing’s stock price drops from $15.52 to $11.60 since the beginning of the month.
BetMGM data breach
After posting an announcement on Monday, December 21, BetMGM has expanded its data breach that began in May 2022 and was revealed on November 28, 2022.
The key points in the data release suggest that similar personal data was stolen from BetMGM’s page that was hacked from DraftKings:
- Customer name/account name
- Address
- Date of birth
- E-mail address
- Telephone number
- Hashed social security number
BetMGM found no evidence that funds were stolen, though the sports betting site are still in contact with the police about how to proceed.
