Say goodbye to the passportword and hello to the password. Apple created the cryptographic feature as a replacement for passwords because they’re more secure, so hackers aren’t guessing combinations to try to get into your account.

This feature allows users to unlock their devices with just their face or fingerprint, making accessing their devices easier and more convenient. With Passkey, the device is unlocked by looking at the device using facial recognition.

Since a person’s face or fingerprint is unique, it will be very difficult for any hacker to be able to unlock a device. With this feature, Apple Passkey allows you to access services such as banking or shopping apps that require authentication.

Passkeys can work across devices with iOS 16 using iCloud Keychain.

After setting up passwords, when you enter a password on a new website while using your iPhone or iPad, you’ll be given the option to save the password to the key. It creates a key that works on the website and is end-to-end encrypted, so only you have that password.

Note that for this to work, the websites you visit must also support this option. Without this feature, you’ll have to enter your password the old-fashioned way.
