When your Google Meet microphone isn’t working, it can bring a meeting to a screeching halt — but the good news is that it’s relatively easy to troubleshoot and resolve. Here are seven ways to get your microphone working in Google Meet.

Make sure your microphone is working properly outside of Google Meet

When it comes to troubleshooting a problem with hardware like a microphone, it’s helpful to make sure the microphone itself is working and then move on to assessing whether it’s working properly in a service like Google Meet. To do so, test the microphone in an app other than Meet. In Windows, for example, you can try recording sound in Sound Recorder. Click Start and write “record”. Click Sound recorder when you see it in the search results, then make a test recording to see if the microphone is working. Be sure to select the same microphone you are trying to use in Google Meet, if there is more than one option. If you’re having a problem on another device, such as your phone, check that you can record audio in an app on that device instead.

Make sure no other apps are using the microphone

A common error you may encounter when starting a video call: For some reason, another app is already using the microphone, and that app won’t release the microphone when Meet needs it. The result is that Meet cannot transmit audio. If you know which app is using the microphone, close it and then restart Google Meet. If you don’t know which app is responsible, restart your device.

Here’s how to restart a Windows computer, and here’s how to restart your iPhone regardless of which model you own. You can turn off most Android phones by holding down the power button for several seconds, or swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping Power icon in the shortcut panel.

Make sure Google Meet has permission to use the microphone

Permissions can be tricky, and it’s entirely possible that you accidentally denied Google Meet permission to use the microphone at some point in the past.

Start on an iPhone Settings app and tap Privacy and security. Press Microphone and make sure of it Meeting is turned on by swiping the button to the right. If you have an Android, start Settings app and tap Apps. Press See all apps and press Meeting. Press Permissionsthereafter Microphoneand activate it by selecting either Allow only while using the app or Ask every time.

If you’re using Windows, go to Settings app and select Privacy and securitythereafter Microphone. Take care of both Allow apps to access your microphone and Allow desktop apps to access your microphone activated by swiping the buttons to the right.

Or, if you’re using a Mac, open System selection and then select Security and privacy. click on Privacy the tab. click on Lock icon at the bottom to unlock the page. Click Microphone to the left and make sure that Meeting is activated with a tick.

Make sure your browser has access to Google Meet

If you’re trying to use Google Meet in the Chrome browser, make sure it’s configured correctly as well. Open Chrometype “chrome://settings/content/microphone” and press enter. Verify that in the Default Behavior section Websites may request to use your microphone is selected. Then start a Google Meet and click on Camera icon in the address bar at the top of the screen. Select Always allow access to the camera and microphone and click Finished.

Check your microphone settings in Google Meet

Another common error is that Google Meet might try to use the wrong microphone – this can easily happen if you have more than one webcam or microphone connected to your device. Particularly common on Windows, for example, you might find that Meet uses the microphone in a VR headset halfway across the room rather than the microphone in the webcam attached to the lid of the laptop. To check, start Google Meet in a browser and click on three dots button at the bottom of the page, and then click Settings in the context menu. click on Sound and then check Microphone the drop-down menu. If necessary, select another microphone and close the window.

Using Meet’s main menu, go to the audio settings and make sure the correct microphone is selected.

Restart the device

If you’ve gotten this far and nothing has worked, it could simply be a case of some intermittent software glitch preventing Google Meet from working properly. The solution: In many situations, you can simply restart your computer or mobile device and then try again.

Update your device’s operating system

Finally, if nothing else has solved the problem, you may need to update your device’s operating system. Windows should automatically install the latest updates, but you can check by clicking on Start button and type “update”. Click Look for updates and then click on Look for updates button.
